The Energy Forum conducted an Island-wide electricity consumer survey covering 2000 Domestic Purpose (DP), 271 General Purpose (GP), 102 Industrial Purpose (IP), 23 Hotel Purpose (HP) and 26 Religious Purposes (RP) consumers.

The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the present level of consumer satisfaction and their expectations with respect to the supply of electricity.

Athureliya – From Village Hydro to Small Power Producer

Sri Lanka has about 300 hundred isolated village hydro micro-grids ranging in size from 3 to 55 kW serving isolated communities. Since early 2000s, Sri Lanka has aggressively expanded its grid connectivity. Presently over 90 percent of households have access to grid power. Many of the villages previously served by the micro hydro schemes now receive grid electricity. Some of the micro hydro plants were underutilized, serving a few households who were unable to get a grid connection or were unused. Thanks to an initiative of the Energy Forum, these village hydro schemes now have the option of selling power to the national grid under the Small Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA) thus permitting the community to continue to benefit from their natural resources. Athureliya is a 21.8 kW village micro-hydro scheme that is the first to begin selling electricity under the SPPA.

Ryutaro Hashimoto APFED Award for Energy Forum

Energy Forum has won the Silver Prize of the 2009 Ryutaro Hashimoto APFED Award ( Asia Pacific Forum for Environment and Development)  for our project titled: "Establishing private, public and civil society partnerships for ensuring the long term sustainability of the off-grid community based renewable energy power projects in Sri Lanka". The Ryutaro Hashimoto APFED Awards for Good Practices (GPs) aim at promoting information dissemination of good practices towards sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific. The initiative collects lessons and experiences from innovative activities implemented in the region in order to promote sustainable development and share knowledge and wisdom with other stakeholders concerned.
