Setting Standards in the Hydro Sector
Setting appropriate technical standards is important if the market for off-grid systems is to grow. Standards ensure reliability of the systems installed and also build consumer confidence and protection.

Energy Forum was funded by the USAID SARI programme to establish national micro hydro standards and to harmonise these with other standards in the region to create regional standards.

Energy Forum formed a regional secretariat to monitor and oversee the development of national standards and their harmonization on a regional level. It also organized a regional workshop in March 2006 to review best practices at national and regional level.

The standards address the whole process from micro hydro site identification to ongoing operation of the sites. They set out guidelines for design, construction, commissioning and maintenance of micro hydro projects. They have have been approved as a Sri Lanka Standard and they act as an important quality control.
